Version 2.1 (13 October 1999)
Index of the Holy Quran: Web version
|
This index is a substantially expanded version of the index in
the work The Holy Quran, Arabic Text with English Translation
and Commentary by Maulana Muhammad Ali as found in its editions
published since 1951 up to the year 2001. It has been incorporated
in the newly typeset edition of this work which has been published
in August 2002.
We publish below a version of the new Index tailored for the World
Wide Web.
Essential notes for using this index (provided
in Web version)
To use this index with pre-2002 editions of Maulana Muhammad Ali's
work, the following points must be noted:
- A new scheme for numbering the footnotes has been introduced,
which is quite simple to understand and use. A reference to a
verse followed by a letter such as a, b or c etc.
indicates a footnote in that verse, with a meaning the
first footnote in that verse, b meaning the second footnote,
c meaning the third, etc. For example:
| 20:85a
| refers to chapter 20, verse 85, first footnote in that
verse.
|
| 2:51b
| refers to chapter 2, verse 51, second footnote in that
verse.
|
| 20:29-34, 29a, 48a
| refers to chapter 20, verses 29 to 34, and also to verse
29, first footnote, and verse 48, first footnote.
|
| 2:260, 260a
| refers to chapter 2, verse 260, and also the first footnote
to verse 260.
|
| 7:150, 151a
| refers to chapter 7, verse 150, and also the first footnote
to verse 151.
|
- Verse numbering in chapters 3, 6, and 4: The verse numbering
used in this Index for most of chapter 3 and chapter 6 differs
by 1 from that in the pre-2002 editions. This change was made
to bring our numbering into line with that used in most translations.
The details are as follows:
In chapter 3, verse 3 of the pre-2002
editions is now treated as being two verses, 3 and 4. Therefore,
verses 4 to 199 of chapter 3 are now numbered as verses 5 to
200.
In chapter 6, verses 73 and 74 of
the pre-2002 editions are now treated as a single verse, 73.
Therefore, verses 75 to 166 of chapter 6 are now numbered as
74 to 165.
In chapter 4, only the last 3 verses
are affected. Verses 173 and 174 of the pre-2002 editions are
now treated as a single verse 173. Therefore, the remaining
verses (175 to 177) are now numbered as 174 to 176.
- A reference such as ch. 19 intro. indicates the introductory
note of the specified chapter.
- In referring to notes which stretch over several paragraphs,
an indication such as "2nd" has been added to direct the reader
to a particular paragraph of the note.
- References to the 'Introduction' to the Holy Quran contained
in Maulana Muhammad Ali's work are given by page number, for example
p. I-26. These page numbers do not apply to pre-2002 editions;
they reflect the page numbers of the Introduction in the year
2002 edition.
- Transliteration: Transliteration marks (such as a line
over the letter a, etc.) have not been used in this version of
the Index. However, the left and right single apostrophes (` and
') are used to denote the Arabic letters `ain and hamza
respectively.
The reader's attention is drawn to the following headings of this
Index in which reference is made to certain important subjects as
dealt with in the Holy Qur'an: Allah, Civic Life, Human Soul, Intellectual
Development, Knowledge, Man, Morals, Muhammad, Muslims, Nature, Prayer,
Qur'an, Revelation, Science, State Polity and Women.
